Episode 24 - 14 Days Later...

Listen to this episode

This week Scott gets the sharp end of the stick, as PJ and Ron attempt to make him look stupid for talking to GIRLS!

Also, we chat about Declan Shalvey's newly published hardback of 28 Days Later, 'porn' on the iTunes App Store and a brief explanation of how to colour comics.

It's all go at Sunnyside Towers. Also! A brief cameo by Karen.

Episode 23 - Chats and Bats

This was a bit of a strange one...

PJ told us about Chat Roulette, y'see, and we kind of got a bit lost in it... (no, I'm not going to link it - Google it - but you've been seriously warned!)
It kind of derailed the show a bit, then we attempted to talk about Erik Larsen's article on anthologies.
Then Scott gave us his thoughts on the Batman 'classic' story A Death in The Family

Look, we can't be held responsible for anything you see on Chat Roulette, ok?

Episode 22 - Live and Mildly Distracting

This week we thought we'd experiment by broadcasting the show live while we did it. Needless to say, it was shambolic, but fun.

Episode 20 & 21

Episode 20 - Crappy New Year

Episode 21 - I'll Take A Tablet...

So, here are the last couple of episodes - if you've subscribed on iTunes you'll already have heard these, but apparently some folks prefer to listen via the player here, so let's not disappoint them!

However, I can't remember what they were about...

Oh yeah, 20 is PJ mainly complaining about his birthday, and 21 is us speculating about what Apple were going to release. This may all seem a bit out-of-date now, so enjoy yourself laughing at the men-from-the-past.

Johnny Cash - I See A Darkness review

Originally published in his native German in 2006 it has taken 3 years to get Reinhard Kleist's 'I See A Darkness' translated and published in the UK, and it's been well worth the wait.

Max and Moritz award winner Kleist tells the story of Johnny Cash as told by Glen Sherley, an inmate at Folsom Prison. In the days leading up to Cash's Folsom concert, Sherley tells a fellow inmate the story of Johnny Cash, a man who he feels connected to "Forget Elvis...Cash is our guy. He knows what it's like to go through Hell". The book takes us through Cash's entire life; from being a cotton farmer's son to the biggest country music star in the world, his battle with prescription medication and suicide attempt to his eventual redemption and recovery.

After Sherley and Cash meet in Folsom the narrative switches for the final pages. Cash, now a frail old man in very poor health, is in his last days of recording his iconic 'American' albums with producer Rick Rubin. Cash now recounts Sherley's early release from Folsom, which Cash himself arranged, and Sherley's time playing with Cash on tour.

I won't go into the final pages of the book, it's something you should read for yourself but the book captures the very darkest parts of Johnny Cash whilst showing the touching and emotional bond he had with his second wife June, his overwhelming need to keep working in spite of serious health problems and June's death just 5 months before his own. 'I See A Darkness' is a late contender for my favourite book of 2009.

Episode 19 - Dashing Through The Snow

Listen to this episode

Ho, Ho, Ho, it's the inevitable Christmas episode!

However, don't expect some sort of razzle-dazzle retrospective spectacular... Scott isn't here, so you're stuck with PJ and Ron taking a misty eyed look at Christmases past, present and future.

Thanks for all the support from all of you this year - we really didn't know if anyone was going to listen to this, and surprisingly there does seem to be a bunch of folks out there who do wait for this every week.

Next year we hope to have some guests on that people will have actually heard of, but we'd be remiss if we didn't also thank our guests this year - Stephen Downey and Andrew Croskery, The Brothers Berserker and Adam Law, and the occasional appearances by Ron's wife Karen.

Also, we'd like to get email from some of you that we can cannibalise into content for the show, so send us your suggestions for subject matter to info@sunnysidecomics.com.

Don't forget to subscribe via iTunes to ensure you get the episodes as soon as they're released!

All that remains to say is enjoy your Christmas and have a Happy New Year!

Episode 18 - And The Geeks Shall Inherit The Earth

So, we're late. We know, we know, you missed us. Let's just say that life got in the way and some stuff had to slide...

This episode we chat about how Geekery can infect your real-life, as well as some iPhone comics and general tangential chat.

Another episode is really close behind, but we'll let this sit for a couple of days to let you all catch up!

Oh, and that Ron's wedding cake photo?

Forbidden Planet's Top 50

Forbidden Planet's Top 50 by Pj, Scott & Ron
(download)

Look, I know we're running behind here, but bear with us...

A few weeks ago this post appeared on Forbidden Planet's blog listing what they thought were the Top 50 comics/graphic novels for this shopping season. During the (imminent) Episode 18, we did a quick run-down of the list to let you know what we thought of them.

Thoughts?

Coming Up on Episode 18

Actually, chances are we'll cut that stuff out of the show. Scott still hasn't twigged that iPhone comics don't work well via an audio medium, and Ron's feelings were hurt by PJ.

Episode 17b - The Geeks Invented It, Y'know?

Part 2, and we open with a little guest appearance by Stacey Whittle from the Small Press Big Mouth podcast. Then we continue our discussion of geeky relationships and love in comics.

Finally Karen reviews Ethel and Ernest by Raymond Briggs (make sure you have a tissue). Note that that's an Amazon Affiliate link, and if you buy it from there we'll get a little scratch from Amazon. Won't cost you a penny extra, and helps us pay for the podcast hosting.

Finally - have you subscribed on iTunes yet? Why not? Do it here!
